| | Recommendation for wireless ADSL router by
Martin Underwood
Can anyone recommend a good wireless ADSL router (ie ADSL modem with 4
Ethernet ports and a wireless access point)? I see that PC World sell the
Linksys WRT54G-UK for £150. This includes Norton Internet Security with a
60-day trial period - I presume this means that you don't get the normal
one-year subscription (which then has to be renewed annually) that you get
with the off-the-shelf product....

| | Does uploading effect your download speed? by
Morgan
If you think of the following scenario...
You are running a FTP and people are downloading from you at a constant 30k
(assuming you have a 512k ADSL) and then you start to download from a known fast
source and expect to download at around 60k it will not happen unless you
throttle your upload to allow acknowledgement packets to be sent to where you
are downloading from.
When you are downloading...

It will have some effect, but is far less pronounced due to the
increased bandwidth. In other words, don't worry about it.

| | BT3021 Bluetooth access point with TDK dongle by
Cuthbert Poncenby-Smyth
I am currently having a problem getting my new BT3021 access point
(tecom) to work. The device appears in bluetooth neighbourhood with an
IP address allocated by my network. However, when I try to pair the
device, I get authentication failure and also, when I run LOCATE, no
device appears in the list. Does anyone have any experience with this
config. Is there perhaps a compatibility issue with...

I'm interested in the £30 option that Bulldog is currently touting for 2Mbps
off-peak.
At present I'm on 512k with Zen.
What's the binary newsgroup coverage like and is there any download limits?

Graeme
In the next 3 months, when the IT dept can pull their finger out, we should
be getting our office running with a VPN. The question is, will my DG814
(which I run from home) be capable? The Netgear web-site says it has "VPN
pass-through protection" but I've heard so much about how buggy the firmware
can be that I'd really like a view from an owner that has actually used VPN
(and what firware...

even tried the BBC website.
Comments? anyone else hear of this?

Saw there advert in Metro paper and was gobsmacked at their offfering of
2MB ADSL at 24.99 exc. vat.
Get PrimeTime 2000 now and enjoy its blistering 2Mb service for the same
price as PrimeTime 1000.
That's just £24.99 (ex VAT) per month (£29.36 inc VAT) for a service that

same price.

| | Multi-port router or router plus hub? by
Old Codger
Hi,
I am having Home500 installed this week and need to make a choice of
router. I currently have an 8-port hub and want to hook up 3 or 4 PCs.
Do I need a multi (say 4 or 8) port router or can I use a single-port
router and plug my hub into that?
I would also like an easily-configurable firewall in the router.
Pros and cons and advice much appreciated.

| | Wireless broadband by
Chris Walters
Living out in the sticks, it seems the only viable option for my village is
to talk to wireless broadband providers, and there are two that seem to be
locally touting for business.
Their approach seems to be a 2Mb/s leased line to a central point in the
village, and then all subscribers take a signal from that central point.
The services are offered at 256 Kb/s and 512 Kb/s downstream with 256...

If you believe you "must" have faster, then there are two ways to achieve

Something odd has started happening the last couple of days - and I don't

No weird programs running on my PC (as far as I know) but as soon as I

Eddie Grant
If it's just for web browsing or downloading music that PC will be ok. It
should handle XP fine (XP min specs 233mhz, 64mb RAM), but if you don't want
to spend too much on XP, or don't want to waste 1.2Gb of HDD space, 98SE
should be fine on that system, and you will be able to run at full speed
512k, no trouble.
