| | Nokia 6300 by
Lynn Williamson
I have just bought a new phone the Nokia 6300 and on opening the box I see
that the CD only works on a PC with XP. Does anyone using a Mac have this
phone, am I missing out on any important stuff. I bought this phone as
according to all the reviews you can access your emails with attachments
which I couldn't do with my previous phone I could just see the emails but
not the attachments! I do...

| | Restartable ADSL Router by
mal_k100
I recently read about a wireless ADSL router that automatically
restarted. Not sure exactly what it meant but I have a Belkin that
locks up now and again, maybe due to traffic on transferring files
between computers so I am looking for one that won't do that.
I have a wireless laptop a desktop and a Freecom NSLU2 (Slug) that I
run as a file server with a couple of external drives so I am...

"Furthermore, the watchdog considered that the claim 'truly unlimited',
in combination with the other claims in the ad, was contradicted by the

The ASA ruled that the Orange ads should not be repeated in their
current form, and told the company not to repeat the claim 'truly

| | TalkTalk Contract Period? by
Mike Roman
Ok, I should know this, I know, y'know, but... I've got TalkTalk broadband
(but I'm prepared to admit it, that must count for something) and I'm
thinking (as I'm sure many people do) about switching. Thing is, I can't
find anything about there being a contract period and the (dire?) penalties
incurred if I try to escape before I've done my time.
Anyone know anything about this? Any succesful...

| | Ofcom consultation: Future broadband - Policy approach to next generation access by
Sunil Sood
Ofcom have published a major new consultation called 'Future broadband
- Policy approach to next generation access' in light of the
increasing interest in new technologies requiring significant
investment to meet the increasing demands for bandwidth.
Next generation access networks may take many forms. They may be based
on upgrades to BT's existing copper access network or Virgin Media's
cable...

| | Move to spur UK broadband speed by
Sunil Sood
The government is willing to consider some form of limited public
intervention to spur private-sector investment in “ultra-fast”
broadband networks, a minister will say on Tuesday night.
Stephen Timms, minister for competitiveness, will use a speech to warn
that the UK risks lagging behind other leading industrialised
countries that are rolling out super-fast, fixed-line...

Insert Random Name Here
How secure it Windows Remote Desktop. I have a windows XP machine I need to
access remotely and the easiest way is via Windows Remote Desktop.
I have made it as secure as possible by using the highest encryption and
setting the policies so that only I can log on and three wrong attempts in a
row to long on will stop any further log on for 60 mins. This I hope should
reduce the possibility of...

| | Range Extenders and such... any tips? by
Mike Roman
Been having something of a fight with a Linksys range extender - I think! It
*seems* that, when it's on, it causes some sort of black-stop between the
router and itself. Is that possible? Anyone had any similar problems? Any
advice (other than "don't use them!" ;o) )?

| | An underhanded sell? by
Evan
I appreciated being informed by a phone agent at Virgin Media that my
longstanding account qualified for me to receive free TV (usually
reserved for those just newly taking a phone service). I refused, the
free TV actually involved a 25 installation fee...and I like my free
freeview.
What I didn't appreciate was being lied to that my aerials would all
have to be replaced when the digital...

| | Unplug Wireless Router ? by
Martin
I'm going to get a Sky wireless router and won't be using the internet
outside the period 3-9pm
Is it possible to switch routers "on" during the period when they are
actually wanted or does something happen to the electronics if regularly
turned on and off ?
Thanks,
Martin

| | ADSL slow after line fault? by
kimble
This is possibly a silly question, but...
ADSL MAX, from freedom2surf, usually connects at around 7800/448kbps,
SNR margin 7.0dB, Attenuation 34.0dB
A couple of days ago, a fault developed on the line: much hissing and
crackling on the phone, and the ADSL frequently losing sync, with the
speed dropping as low as 192/288 with the margin and attenuation all
over the place.

| | Virgin Media are misleading again :o( by
Gonz
It uses Samknows for the information, and it never lists higher than
7MB.
And the main thing it doesn't do is list ADSL2+ which is a lot faster
than ADSL.
It's inaccurate and misleading.
I won't mention about how they now run fibre further than the green box
to your door now.

| | Any reason I can't daisychain a router onto a BT Voyager 205 modem? by
triffid@oink.co.uk
Hi,
I was recently helping someone temporarily share someone else's
internet connection (with permission). The owner was originally
connected via a BT Voyager 205 (or 210) ASDL modem, but this only
supports one connection.
As I didn't want to mess with their configuration, I plugged an
Ethernet router/switch into the back of the Voyager (from the router's
WAN socket to the Voyager's single...
